School Bus Driver

Location: Aurora, CO
Employment Status: Full-Time, Non-Exempt
Pay Range: $25.00–$29.50 per hour (based on experience)

Position Summary

Ramblin Express is seeking professional, safety-focused CDL School Bus Drivers to safely transport passengers on charter, shuttle, contract, and school-related trips throughout Colorado. Drivers are responsible for operating commercial passenger vehicles in compliance with all Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), Colorado Department of Education (CDE), Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and company safety regulations while providing exceptional customer service.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Safely operate commercial passenger vehicles on assigned routes.
  • Conduct required pre-trip, en-route, and post-trip vehicle inspections.
  • Safely transport passengers, including students, while maintaining a professional and courteous demeanor.
  • Maintain required DOT logs, inspection reports, and other documentation.
  • Comply with all FMCSA, CDE, CDOT, ADA, and company safety regulations and policies.
  • Communicate effectively with dispatch, supervisors, school personnel, and passengers.
  • Report accidents, incidents, vehicle defects, and safety concerns immediately.
  • Participate in required safety meetings, training, and annual certification requirements.
  • Assist passengers during boarding, exiting, and emergency evacuations when necessary.
  • Safely operate wheelchair lifts, ramps, and securement systems when transporting passengers with mobility devices.
  • Properly secure wheelchairs and mobility aids in accordance with ADA requirements, manufacturer specifications, and CDE/school district procedures.
  • Provide appropriate assistance to passengers with disabilities while maintaining dignity, respect, and safety.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Valid CDL Class A or Class B License.
  • Passenger (P) Endorsement required.
  • School Bus (S) Endorsement required
  • Current DOT Medical Examiner’s Certificate.
  • Ability to pass DOT pre-employment, random, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, return-to-duty, and follow-up drug and alcohol testing.
  • Acceptable Motor Vehicle Record meeting company insurance requirements.
  • Ability to pass required criminal background screening.
  • Ability to meet all FMCSA, CDE, school district, and company qualification standards.
  • Successfully complete all required CDE and company training before transporting students.
  • Current CPR, First Aid, and Universal Precautions certification, or ability to obtain within the required timeframe.
  • Ability to successfully complete required CDE written and performance evaluations, including annual recertification requirements.
  • Ability to safely operate wheelchair lifts, secure mobility devices, and assist passengers with disabilities, or successfully complete required ADA and CDE accessibility training prior to assignment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two (2) or more years of commercial passenger transportation experience.
  • Previous motorcoach or school transportation experience.
  • Mountain driving experience.
  • Experience transporting students and/or individuals with disabilities.
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills.

Physical Requirements

The employee must be able to:

  • Sit for extended periods while operating a commercial vehicle.
  • Climb bus steps and enter/exit the vehicle multiple times per shift.
  • Lift and carry up to 50 pounds occasionally.
  • Push, pull, and secure wheelchairs and mobility devices using approved securement systems.
  • Assist passengers with boarding, exiting, and emergency evacuations.
  • Bend, kneel, crouch, and reach as necessary to inspect vehicles and assist passengers.
  • Work indoors and outdoors in varying weather and road conditions.

Colorado Department of Education (CDE) Compliance

Drivers assigned to student transportation must maintain compliance with all applicable Colorado Department of Education School Transportation Rules (1 CCR 301-26), including but not limited to:

  • Maintaining all required CDL endorsements and DOT qualifications.
  • Completion of required CDE pre-service and annual in-service training.
  • Annual written and performance evaluations, including vehicle inspection proficiency.
  • Current CPR, First Aid, and Universal Precautions certification.
  • Mandatory Reporter Training, when required by the contracting school district.
  • Compliance with ADA accessibility requirements, including wheelchair lift operation and mobility device securement.
  • Compliance with all applicable school district policies and procedures.
  • Successful completion of any additional district-specific training required for assigned contracts.
